Roddy Engineering was engaged to design, fabricate and install new access infrastructure and valve operation upgrades at a remote site. The works involved developing a practical and site-specific solution to improve access and operation of the existing infrastructure, while considering the challenging terrain, remote location and sensitivity of the surrounding environment.
The ground and existing infrastructure were surveyed prior to design, allowing Roddy Engineering to develop an access stair and platform system specifically suited to the site conditions. Due to the remoteness of the location and sensitivity of the surrounding environment, the system incorporated a no-concrete installation solution, helping to minimise ground disturbance while providing safe and reliable access.
The fabricated access system included a series of stairs, platforms, landings and handrailing designed to accommodate the steep terrain and provide improved access to the existing infrastructure. Components were designed and fabricated to suit the surveyed conditions before being transported to site for installation.
As part of the works, Roddy Engineering also designed, supplied and installed modified turning wheels and valve handle extensions. These modifications raised the operating position of the existing valves from ground level to approximately waist or chest height, providing operators with a more practical and accessible means of operating the valves. The design also considered future maintenance requirements, ensuring the extensions could be removed where necessary to allow access to the existing valves.
Additional handrailing was designed and installed around valve access points to improve safety and reduce the risk of personnel falling into the valve pits. The handrail arrangements were carefully designed around the existing infrastructure to ensure they did not interfere with the operation of slide gates or the removal and installation of access mesh.
With the dimensions and configuration varying between locations, the project required a site-specific approach to design and fabrication. Consideration was given to existing equipment, operator access, maintenance requirements and the surrounding terrain to ensure each installation remained practical and functional.
The completed works provided an improved access and operating arrangement for the site, combining custom-fabricated stairs, platforms, handrailing and valve extensions into a solution suited to the challenging remote environment.
