Roddy Engineering was engaged by WaterNSW to complete access upgrades within the Blowering Dam Valve House, including the removal and replacement of existing non-compliant access ladders and handrailing.
The works involved the installation of two new access ladders, requiring modifications to the existing concrete platform to accommodate the new arrangement. A section of reinforced concrete was carefully cut and removed, with Roddy Engineering designing and installing a certified steel suspended platform in its place.
To adequately support the additional loads associated with the new platform, ladder and handrailing system, a fabricated steel support column was installed beneath the platform. The new access arrangement was designed to provide a safe, practical and compliant solution while integrating with the existing infrastructure within the Valve House.
The upper section of the new ladder system also incorporated a ladder cage and self-closing safety gate, providing additional fall protection and ensuring the completed access system met the requirements of AS 1657:2018.
Working within the existing Valve House presented a number of constraints, including limited access, existing services and infrastructure, and the need to carefully coordinate modifications to the concrete and structural elements. The completed works provided WaterNSW with an upgraded access system designed to improve safety and compliance while maintaining reliable access within the facility.
